From the Psalms we read “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision” (Psalm 2:4).
He…shall laugh. Scripture often gives pictures of our LORD as possessing human traits. And though theologians give technical labels to theses traits, they merely stand as proofs that our God is personal. Here we discover God laughing! Imagine it. The great Creator of the universe…Pure Spiritual Being laughs! Does that not itself justify our own desire to see humor in life?
The LORD shall hold them in derision. What does our LORD laugh about? I suspect He finds some of the very same things funny as we do. Nevertheless, in our text today, what God finds humorous, the peoples of this world take serious. God laughs at the efforts of men to overthrow His Kingdom, spurn His Son and set up their own alternate rule. While humans believe seriously they can pull this off, God laughs on the one hand but He will speak on the other.
Unfortunately on this particular occasion, He speaks with His wrath.
-Let Us Pray-
Father! Forgive our foolishness in thinking for a moment we can build a rival Kingdom. Forever call to our minds, O Lord, Babel’s utter failure. May we learn from their tragic mistake. Make in us a mind to know You and a heart to please You. Place in our heart of hearts a humble spirit to submit to Your Sovereign Rule. Amen.
